ENERGY STORAGE

Battery storage for excess solar energy to save you money and worry.

We design, engineer, and install battery systems to build your capacity to store the energy your solar panels make.

How Does it Work?

Agathon Solar offers solar backup power to our Michigan solar customers. We install long-lasting dependable solar batteries. Batteries do have an initial start-up cost but will in the long run out-perform noisy and polluting generators. We install all types of battery technologies.

Batteries not only provide power when the grid goes down, but they can also be used to “shave the peak”. For instance, Consumers Energy charges considerably more per kilowatt hour from 2 to 7pm during the summer. This is the perfect time to discharge your battery and “shave” that peak rate right off! Consider this, if your battery has a warrantied cycle rating of 6,000, that battery’s warranty period is 16.43 years if you cycle it down fully everyday. Most obviously, batteries store the excess energy you produce.

The below batteries are all great and it is really through the development of an energy strategy that one can determine the best fit for your application.

Agathon Solar has researched the top solar backup power system brands and we recommend a battery like the Fortress Power Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) over the Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) batteries offered by Tesla and Generac. This video outlines the differences between the technologies.

LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Advantages over NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt)
Cycle Life

LFP has a higher cycle life, 6,000 or more with an 80 to 90% depth of discharge (DOD).

Safer

LFP chemistry is not nearly as subject to thermal run off which can cause fires in battery products.

Environment

Manufacturing process with LFP is much cleaner while Generac and Tesla both use NMC chemistry that has Cobalt. The mining process for cobalt is far from green and has some other questionable activities to get it from the earth.

End of life

Most of the components in an LFP battery will be able to be recycled at the end of its service life. This is not the case with NMC primarily because of the cobalt.

Overall the LFP battery is superior to either the Tesla or Generac battery. This video illustrates the above very clearly.

Blue Ion is our top pick for an LFP battery for a number of reasons. The warranty of 15 years and 8,000 cycles is unparalleled in the industry. Furthermore, it is capable of high-power performance and scalability, and all in a sleek aerospace aluminum and stainless-steel housing. This battery chemistry is safe and there are additional safeguards built in. The HI version comes in 8, 12, and 16 kWh configurations and can be stacked. The LX version has a minimum size of 128 kWh. Both versions are for off grid or grid tied applications.

Fortress offers a number of different batteries and boast of 8,000 cycles at 80% DOD with a 10-year warranty. The eVault Max is 18.5 kWh and expandable up to 370 kWh. A nice option for wall mounting is the eFlex 5.4 kWh battery and their DuraRack Enclosure is the first to offer a heated cabinet for cold climates that is also IP65 rated. Fortress also offers a residential inverter battery system in its FlexTower all-in-one and with its eSpire 233 a commercial 125 kW inverter and 233 kWh battery.

Homegrid by Lithion is another great option and is easily expandable. It’s residential Stack’d series allows up to 8 modules in one stack for a total of 38.4 kWh. This battery manufacturer has also made an all-in-one cabinet that the Sol-Ark inverter fits into perfectly. Homegrid also has a small Compact series wall mounted option and the commercial Power Bloc Series with a number of high power configurations.

Simpliphi has too many options to list, from all-in-one systems to off-grid power kits and a full range of residential and commercial options. This company was recently acquired by Briggs and Stratton and now has its own 6 kW inverter and battery expansion options. Another great choice with 10,000 cycles at 80% DOD or 10-year warranty.
